Are You Concerned About Losing Weight
Fad diets are diets designed to be followed for only a short period of time. The term has also come to mean any diet that explodes into national or international fame, only to plummet into obscurity. The Hollywood diet, the Atkins diet, and Jenny Craig are just three examples.
Fad diets are sometimes known as food fad-ism. This refers to any form of food that becomes popular for a short period of time. These all have two things in common:
- The food is attributed with miraculous powers.
- Some foods must be avoided because they have equally amazing powers, but that do bad things.
As an example of these elements of fad diets in the diet, take the Atkins diet. Carbohydrates are avoided like the plague, because a carbohydrate low diet can do amazing things for your body. Carbohydrates take on both of the common elements in that removing carbohydrates from the diet creates a near magical metabolic state in which fat is burned at an incredible rate. This diet even included short phases, followed by sustained phases. However, many people are able to continue the Atkins diet for years.
As with many fad diets Atkins rose quickly and fell just as quickly. For a number of years the Atkins diet was everywhere, and everyone seemed to be following it . Every movie star, singer, and sports figure claimed to use the Atkins diet when they needed to lose weight. Although still around today, the diet is far from as popular as it was at its height.
Many fad diets can be quite dangerous. The Subway diet made popular in television commercials wasn’t exempt. At its center was a young man named Jared who had lost hundreds of pounds in only a year by eating Subway sandwiches. But Jared had made a radical shift in his caloric habits. Doctors agree that weight loss on that scale isn’t healthy. Even so, the Subway diet when followed in moderation can work. Particularly because the diet included exercise — Jared walked 6 miles a day while losing the weight.
Approach fad diets with caution. A healthy combination of reasonable diet and exercise in the long-term can help you lose weight and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Visit wellness for living for more articles about dieting smart.
